Filson vs Carhartt

One guarantees the garment for the life of the garment. The other excludes zips by name. The price gap is roughly four times, and the gap in paper is larger.

The two documents

Filson guarantees every item for the lifetime of the item against failure of materials, workmanship, craftsmanship and manufacturer defects. It defines product lifetime as the point at which, through normal use, the item can no longer serve its intended purpose. Excluded: animal damage, chemical damage, airline and shipping damage, extreme wear, and third-party or customer alterations.

Carhartt publishes a limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover damage from normal wear and tear, including zippers and other hardware, nor misuse, neglect or obvious abuse.

Those are very different promises, and they are both honestly stated. Filson’s is the stronger one by a wide margin.

What “extreme wear” is doing in that sentence

It is the exclusion that does the work. A Mackinaw cruiser worn daily through brush for fifteen years could reasonably be described as extreme wear, and that would be the company’s call rather than yours.

We are not suggesting Filson applies it aggressively - its reputation in the field is good. But a reader deciding between four hundred dollars and a hundred should know that the guarantee is not unconditional, and it is clearer about its limits than most.

The materials gap is real

Filson Mackinaw wool at 26oz is warm when wet, quiet in brush, naturally fire-resistant in a way synthetics are not, and essentially maintenance-free. It is also heavy, not waterproof, and needs protecting from moths.

Filson tin cloth is oil-finish cotton and is as close to armor as fabric gets against thorns. It needs re-waxing every year or two.

Carhartt duck is 12oz cotton canvas: tough, cheap, water-repellent not waterproof, and stiff for a month.

The Filson fabrics are genuinely better materials. Whether they are four times better depends entirely on what you do in them.

The honest use-case split

Buy Carhartt if the jacket will get paint on it, live in a van, be worn by whoever is nearest, and be replaced without ceremony. A cheap jacket you treat as a consumable is a perfectly rational buy-it-for-life decision - you have simply located the durability in your wallet rather than in the garment.

Buy Filson if you will own one jacket for decades, look after it, and want the company to still be standing behind it in 2050. The wool version in particular is a genuine heirloom garment.

The thing that applies to both

Budget for a zip replacement. It is the failure on any work jacket, Carhartt excludes it explicitly, and Filson’s coverage of a worn slider after fifteen years would be a conversation rather than a certainty.

An alterations tailor does it for a fraction of a new jacket, and it is the single highest-leverage repair in this hub.

Warranty terms below are quoted from the brand’s own published documents. “Not published” means we looked and the brand does not say.

#1Better guarantee

Filson Mackinaw Wool Cruiser

The only garment in this hub with a genuine lifetime guarantee behind it. Filson guarantees every item for the lifetime of the item against failure of materials, workmanship and manufacturer defects - and a 26oz virgin wool Mackinaw is built to make that promise cheap to keep.

What it gets right

  • Filson guarantees the item for its lifetime against failure of materials, workmanship and craftsmanship
  • 26oz Mackinaw wool stays warm wet, which no cotton shell does
  • A design essentially unchanged since 1914, so parts and repairs stay available

What you give up

  • Costs several times a Carhartt jacket
  • The guarantee excludes extreme wear, animal and chemical damage and third-party alterations
  • Heavy, and wool needs care that canvas does not

  • Not waterproof, only water-repellent
  • Stiff until broken in

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is Filson worth four times Carhartt?

For a jacket you will own for thirty years, the guarantee and the wool arguably justify it. For a jacket that lives in a van and gets covered in paint, Carhartt is clearly the right answer - and Filson's guarantee excludes extreme wear.

What does Filson's guarantee actually cover?

Failure of materials, workmanship, craftsmanship and manufacturer defects, for the lifetime of the item - defined as the point at which through normal use it can no longer serve its intended purpose. Animal damage, chemical damage, extreme wear and third-party alterations are excluded.

Does Carhartt cover zip failure?

No. Its published limited warranty explicitly excludes normal wear and tear including zippers and other hardware. That is the most likely failure on a work jacket, and the warranty names it as excluded.
