Four terms, printed side by side
Darn Tough. Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee. Covers wearing a hole in the sock, including threadbare spots from normal wear and tear, and inadvertent damage - the company’s published example is scorching the soles too close to a campfire. No receipt required. The company states there is no fine print and no stipulations.
Smartwool. Two years.
Thorlo. A 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
Wigwam. Defects in materials and workmanship, with proof of purchase and a return form.
Carhartt. A limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship that explicitly does not cover normal wear and tear - which, for a sock, is the only failure there is.
Those are not variations on a theme. One of them replaces a sock you wore out. The others replace a sock that was made wrong.
Why the category is like this
Socks are the clearest possible case of a product whose normal failure is wear-through. A warranty that excludes wear on a sock is excluding essentially everything, which is why defects-only sock warranties are almost never claimed.
Darn Tough built its business on reversing that, and it is able to because the socks are knit in Vermont on its own machines with a dense merino-nylon blend that genuinely takes years to wear through. The guarantee is a claim about the product as much as a promise about the paperwork.
The arithmetic
A pair of Darn Tough costs roughly four times a decent supermarket wool sock. If the supermarket sock lasts a year and the Darn Tough is replaced free forever, the crossover is somewhere in year three or four. Past that the expensive sock is simply cheaper, permanently.
The caveat is behavioral, and it is the same caveat as everywhere else on this site: the arithmetic only works if you make the claim. A worn-out guaranteed sock that goes in the bin is just an expensive sock. Keep a note of the claim process; it takes five minutes.
Where the others still win
Smartwool fits better for a lot of feet. Its shaping through the arch and heel is genuinely a step above Darn Tough’s, and a sock that fits badly will not be worn however long it lasts. If Darn Tough does not suit your foot, two years of Smartwool is a better outcome than a lifetime of socks in a drawer.
Thorlo has more padding underfoot than anything else here. On concrete for ten hours a day that is a real comfort difference, and the 30-day guarantee is honest about what it is.
Wigwam is American-made merino at a lower price, which is a legitimate middle ground.
What to actually buy
Four pairs of Darn Tough, in the weight that matches your boots, and then stop buying socks. Full cushion for work boots, midweight for everything else, and the Steely if you wear steel toes - the reinforced toe box exists because a steel cap destroys the front of ordinary socks within weeks.
If they do not fit your feet, buy Smartwool and accept the two-year term. That is a sensible trade and we would rather say so than insist on the warranty winner.
