Leatherman vs Victorinox

Victorinox has the better warranty. Leatherman has replaceable wear parts. Which matters more depends on whether you use the pliers or the knife.

The warranties

Victorinox: a lifetime guarantee against any defects in material and workmanship, excluding misuse and abuse.

Leatherman: a 25-Year Limited Warranty to the original owner, running 25 years from receipt. Accessories and sheaths drop to two years; apparel and soft goods are not covered.

On paper Victorinox wins. In practice 25 years is longer than most people keep most things, and Leatherman’s reputation for honoring it is strong.

The feature that beats the warranty

On the Leatherman Wave+, the wire cutters are replaceable inserts and the bit driver takes standard bits. Those are the two parts that actually wear out, and both are user-replaceable for a few dollars.

The Victorinox SwissTool has no equivalent. Its warranty is longer; its consumables are not serviceable.

Which you prefer depends on whether you would rather send a tool away or fix it on a bench.

Outside versus inside opening

Leatherman Wave+ puts the knife blades on the outside. You can open the knife one-handed without unfolding the pliers, which is the single most-used action on a multitool for most people.

Victorinox SwissTool keeps everything inside and locks every implement, which is a genuine safety difference - an unlocked implement under load is how multitool injuries happen. The rounded handles also do not bite the palm the way Leatherman’s squared-off ones do under hard squeezing.

The weight question

A Wave+ is a belt tool. A SwissTool is heavier still. Both are substantial objects and plenty of people buy one, carry it for a month and then leave it in a drawer.

The Victorinox Huntsman - 100 grams, fifteen functions, no pliers, with a wood saw that genuinely works - is the tool most likely to actually be in your pocket in five years. On this site, a tool you carry beats a better tool you do not.

The verdict

Leatherman Wave+ if the pliers are the point and you want the consumables to be spare parts.

Victorinox SwissTool if the lifetime guarantee and locking implements matter more than one-handed blade access.

Victorinox Huntsman if what you actually need is a knife, a screwdriver, a bottle opener and a saw in your pocket every day - which, for most people, it is.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Which multitool warranty is better?

Victorinox, on wording - a lifetime guarantee against defects in material and workmanship. Leatherman publishes 25 years to the original owner, with accessories and sheaths at two years and soft goods not covered at all.

Are Leatherman wire cutters replaceable?

On the Wave+ and several other models, yes - the cutters are replaceable inserts. Combined with a bit driver that takes standard bits, that makes the two genuine consumables user-serviceable.

Which is better for everyday carry?

The Victorinox Huntsman, by weight. At around 100 grams it lives in a pocket permanently, where a Wave+ is a belt tool that many people stop carrying.
